1. What has provoked you as a history student to pursue spirituality as the part of your study and then career?

It was never a conscious decision. I was not an entirely religious or spiritual person from the time I knew of what the world literally looks like or what you call, gained awareness as to why things happen in my surroundings, etc. When you are a child, you are more adventurous and nothing gets to you but as you grow older, opinions start to pinch you where they essentially should not. I had two options in my head. I would either become a professor or opt for civil services. The latter was not a cup of tea because it would require hours of burying my head into books and I had been bitten by the creative bug way back in school, I thought I should give it a try. I pursued research and I am currently finishing my doctorate degree. As a history student, you do not get a lot of support from your peers growing up because people tend to look at you like you are dumb or not much able to take on complicated equations. I think the maximum amount of support that I got was when I started writing academic articles as a freelancer because it was easier to search stuff and not get bored. Spiritual practices did catch my eye a little before my admission to Jamia Millia Islamia University (hereafter JMI), New Delhi, while I was preparing the theme for my PhD work. I was extremely frustrated because my previous university turned mw down for about six times even if I was deserving than the majority of the candidates who had appeared for the interview. I now realise why that had happened. When I talk to people about energy, I also mention how your environment helps to shape you as a person. The people I was surrounded by before joining JMI never gave me the kind of support I wanted or looked for. There was hooting and the congratulatory messages but those felt empty because they never gave a look into the content I posted online or bought any of my books. I had authored two books during my academic years before my enrolment into the doctoral programme in JMI. It so happened that the lack of support or you could say, the absence of genuine appreciation led one thing into another; when you have less of something you have truly desired all your life, you strive for more. I wanted to reach out to more people and educate them about the unconventional aspects of my field of study but it did not happen. I never had that outlet and once I understood what true spirituality is, I was enthralled by the wholesome approach to living the kind of life that makes you go to sleep in peace. Years of being ridiculed for excelling at something did not go down well with me because it drew a lot of contempt from random places and made me feel quite secluded in an academic space. My first tryst with spirituality was actually the day when somebody told me that in order to fight people who hurt you or demean you, you really do not need anything but a powerful Source. Once you surrender to that Source, they have something to fear about and now, it is not you who is fearing them. I feel I had that programmed into my subconscious so well that every challenge thrown at me thereafter, made me have more faith in myself and that Power, we call God or Universe sometimes, somehow protects me from obstacles that have the potential to break me. Now I am at a point, where you cannot break me. You can tell me a thousand things to offend me, but I will probably smile and walk away because when you know God or the Universe is taking care of you, it is also making sure that you are safe from those who can harm you.

And, also because we do philosophize a lot of the academic material, deconstructing theories is an essential exercise. So, you could say, when there is an emotionally turbulent time, instead of fretting over it, I would sit and decode where what went wrong and how I can fix it. Earlier I would only focus on the problem and not the solution. Spirituality taught me that.

2. How do you look at healing?

Healing is very personal. I might be someone who can have a rough school life but a pretty good domestic life, it might be the opposite for someone else. What causes a trigger is for someone to understand it themselves. You can seek help, but that too no one can force you to. I read this somewhere that enlightenment is a lot like dying; nobody wants to die so they are scared to seek the truth because that could possibly make them face their own demons. Healing is also not linear. We heal every day as we age, there can never be an end to healing. It is also one of the most significant aspects you get to learn in spirituality that if you do not heal from what broke you, you will hurt the ones that love you. I am not saying this because it sounds fancy but a lot of people who are rude or nasty in their behavior are those that have never seen love and do not know to express love owing to the trauma they carry from their predecessors. Nobody wants to understand why they are aggressive or why they feel fearful of being abandoned, which is why they tend to hurt those who make an attempt to love them. They hurt the ones who are kind to them because kindness is an alien concept for someone who has never witnessed love or sympathy growing up. Talks of broken marriages, kids from broken homes or spouses who have faced abuse are increasingly rampant because that gives another unhealed human something to gossip about. When you see a similar situation like yours, you will indulge in that petty conversation instead of understanding why a sad state as this occurs in the first place and work towards a purpose that may alter the situations mentioned above. Those who talk of their emotional struggle and their moments of brokenness are the ones who are making an attempt to heal. Those in denial, in a lot of ways, get caught in a web of unawareness and lack of purpose and seek pleasure in despondency. Therefore, healing is entirely personal. Just like suffering is.

3. How can we heal via changing our language patterns?

I have always believed that violence of the mouth is the worst kind of violence one can think of. When you say mean things to someone or to yourself, you operate from a place of fear because that is what you are thinking in the light of an unfavourable situation. Nobody has seen what holds next but your mind goes into a dark place because it is through a network of correspondence, like, one bad thought leading to the other. Children pick it up from their parents; which is why, they act like their parents in a crisis. When children see their parents dealing or talking with emotional grounding, it is easier to work around the problem and solve it. So, response and not react, is the way to heal. For instance, the look of panic or a rather unpleasant word adopted to react to a situation can be replaced by a mellow response like, “Interesting”, “I see”, “I can feel that”, etc. Reactions are always similar to expressions like, “Why has this happened to me?”, “Why do all bad things happen here?”, “Nobody loves me”, “I do not want to live”, etc. The world is not crashing down, one must remember. Most importantly, how you speak to yourself is the key to healing through language patterns.

4. Today we have been exposed to different terminologies from our young age. How does it affect our mind keeping in mind the information we are consuming everyday?

There is a lot of information about every thing these days. Consumption through all senses is crucial. What I hear must correspond to what I see, think, feel, smell or taste. Coming back to consumption as per the amount of information we have around us, we can always choose to receive them. if you are going to listen to sad songs or watch soap operas that are far from reality, it will shape your consciousness the same way. From our young age, we have been learning through various mediums, schooling, college education, work life, social life, etc. What we choose to retain is our decision. More often than not, when one resorts to spirituality, they leave the information that had been passed down without proper rationale or design to live a fruitful life. You cannot see change in your physical world until your inner world has not changed. Your inner world has to do away with ideas that do not serve your higher purpose in this lifetime. For instance, if I am someone who has had a people pleasing manner of conversing, I need to change that because it will not make me into a strong, sorted or influential human. As far as terminologies are concerned, one must devote time to reading good books and self- analyse behavioural patterns.

5. How is manifesting and healing through change in language inter- relate?

We have something called a mental diet in manifesting. We use affirmations to adopt the vibration of someone who has already achieved the desire, because that is what leads you to not chase what you want rather be assured that you shall get it. There is a revision method, we call Retroplasticity, which is the term for altering past events. We write down the event of suffering in the fashion we would want to see it happen or would have liked it when it had happened. It is altering the events as well as evoking the reality we want to be in. Since we are in a multiverse and each one of us is in a matrix, one can switch into whatever reality they want to be in. also, perception is reality, that is a tenet I discovered in manifestation techniques. What one assumes turns into a fact because our eyes create what we want to see and also what we do not want to see. What we do not want to see is our choice again therefore energy when diverted to what we want to see makes us experience the same. It is the same reason why attachment to past events leads one to experience similar experiences later on too because memory stores the events that have scarred one. Revision and journaling thoughts can help one in healing. Manifestation is nothing but making your imagination come into the physical world. What you keep saying or thinking will eventually draw energy in the corresponding fashion and that keeps getting manifested.

6. Is there any commonality between spirituality and psychology? If yes, or no then why?

There is a faint line between the both and removing that would actually mesh the two. The line is called logic. Where spirituality thrives mostly on a way of life through practices and a certain lifestyle, psychology is study of the mind and finding answers as to why someone would behave in a XYZ manner. Spirituality calms your mind in a number of ways. Both of them supply answers regarding the human mind but consciousness functions differently when it comes to spirituality. In spiritual realms, consciousness is connection to a source. The source could be anything. It could be yourself, the Source of the Universe or the Almighty. When one is spiritual they seek for the truth. This truth could be the one they have been seeking all their lives but no one could call them delusional or completely barmy. When you use psychology to determine behavior, there are only two ways of categorizing oneself, you are either normal or abnormal. Years ago, I read Veronica Decides to Die by the acclaimed author, Paulo Coelho, where a particular idea stuck with me, everyone is their own kind of mad; someone who appears to you as a mad person could have a different way of looking at the world but that does not mean that they are less cognizant. Spirituality blurs the line between the mad and the normal. There is a place for everyone here.
